Début – what a show!

Cold, wet and miserable; enough to put anyone off venturing out for the evening. Not so, however, for the capacity crowd that filled the Aurora Centre on Saturday night to see Début – CPIT’s highly-anticipated fashion show.

From fresh street style to Hispanic geisha elegance, the Début fashion showcase captivated the audience from start to finish.

The talent of our third-year fashion students impressed. They delivered on all levels of the creative brief from design, pattern-making and manufacture to model choreography and music choice. The result was the production of 12 truly wearable collections that pushed the boundaries of conventional trends without compromising on style or sophistication.

One designer in particular brought the show to life, much to the delight of the audience. Jay Vatananan’s collection ‘Bike Me,’ inspired by leading skate and street wear label Huffer, proved an absolute highlight. The models encapsulated the personality of the collection using hip-hop dance, and the attitude that goes with it, to produce an entertaining, sexy and funky show that was well received by the crowd.

Overall, the event encompassed everything on which CPIT’s School of Fashion and Technology has built its reputation – ensuring the future sustainability of New Zealand’s fashion industry by allowing its students to develop and illustrate their own creativity and sense of style through stunning design and quality manufacture.

Bring on PITCH 2010! If it’s anything like Début, it will be one show not to be missed.
